The Second Five Of Ten Horror Movies To Enjoy This Halloween

An awesome holiday! One worth spending doing a movie marathon!

So we did the first five movies over at AwesomeBMovies.com, I hope that you will find something from that era that will work for you this Halloween... I mean there are a lot of great horror movies to have come out between the 1920s - 1960s!

Well now that we have done that run, it is time to show you some great horror films from the 1970s on up that could be great choices for this Halloween as well!

At number 1: Halloween (1978).  

Now this one is a little obvious, but the truth is, is John Carpenter's, 'Halloween' has in a lot of respects been one of the defining movies when it comes to horror movies to enjoy during Halloween, and is one that if you are looking for something to scare the hell out of you this Halloween, will do a great job!  

Number 2: Cannibal Holocaust (1980).

Cannibal Holocaust... This horror film from the 1980s is truly gruesomely fun, and could be said to be one of the more famous Cannibal movies of all time... If you do decide on this one though... Watch it with some one there... You won't regret it! 

Next up at number 3: Tales From The Crypt Presents: Demon Knight (1995).

Now this movie, (which was based on the classic horror anthology TV series/Comics, 'Tales From The Crypt Presents',) does have some fun thrills and chills, but what it looses in over the top chills, they make up in just having an absolutely bad-ass movie! 

And at number 4: 28 Days Later (2002).

This one is an awesome British Zombie movie, that is as much fun now as it was then... And I will say this, I suspect that the way this movie was filmed had some influence on at least how some of the earlier seasons of, 'The Walking Dead were filmed!' 

And finally at number 5 we have: Scream 4 (2011).

With this one, you might be asking yourself why I am doing a sequel movie instead of an original movie... Well the truth is, is the original for this movie would make for a great addition to this list, but I thought that I would mention, 'Scream 4', because let's be honest, this movie series was fantastic, and as long as the studio is smart and lets the movie series die, then it will have gone out with a bang!

Congo (1980) - Michael Crichton - Book Review

Man... Michael Crichton, what can I say about the man... I mean when I was a kid and just getting in to reading books for more then just for School, I found his novels to be like movies... Fun, exciting, and frankly they kept me on the edge of my seat! And you know what else, just about all the books he has ever written that were adapted in to movies, well I have to say were just plain better in book form then they were in movie form!

And when I discovered that he passed away, and that there wouldn't be anymore novels, well I have to say that it was pretty heart breaking!

And speaking of movies that were adapted from his books being not as good as the books 'Congo' (1980) was a sterling example of this!

Not like his other page turners... But still a fun book!

You see this book tells the story of how when an exploratory mission is sent out in to the Congo, and ends ups being massacred by a group of weird looking Gorillas... Another mission is sent out to investigate what happened to the first expedition, and to continue there original expedition!

Now as I mentioned above, the book is certainly better then the movie... I mean I maybe one of the 5 or 6 people on Earth that actually liked the big screen adaption, but the book I do have to admit was a lot more fun... Now the only thing is that this one for me was not like, 'Jurassic Park' (1990), or even, 'The Lost World' (1995)... But still... It was enough to keep me interested!

Four Summer Camp Slashers That You'll Never Forget!

Sleepaway Camp (1983)... A great example of a fun Summer Camp slasher film!

Summer Camp, a time for young men and women to get a taste of the great outdoors, to run, to play... And even in some cases, for a boy or girl to find his or her's first love... That is the sappy hallmark version of it... But we fright fans know how Summer Camps can become a, 'bloody' good time... Don't we?

That's right folks, where as it is true that the whole summer camp experience is generally a time for kids on summer vacation to have fun in the great out doors, Hollywood has turned this time honored tradition in to mayhem and bloody violence, with some of the most famous slasher movies of all time being set in and around the Summer Camp setting...

So I thought that you guys might enjoy these Five Summer Camp Slashers That You'll Never Forget!

At number 4: Friday The 13th (1980):

This counselor will never forget his Camp experience!

 Friday The 13th (1980)... Now here is a classic example of a great Summer Camp slasher, you see this movie has it all, an unsuspecting group of soon-to-be camp counselors who went up to Camp Crystal Lake to help Steve Christy (The owner of the summer camp,) re-open the camp... Little do they know, a former counselor is ready to take out her anger on a new generation of counselors!

How would you like to have her in your Summer Camp?

 You might be wondering why I mentioned this twice? Well the truth is, is I kind of had to... I had no choice... I mean i was compelled to do so, because in all honesty, this movie is not only a great 80s Summer Camp slasher, but in all honesty, and in a lot of respects, this movie helped set the tone for a lot of the the 80s Summer Camp slasher movies out there!

Just when you thought it would be safe to go back to Camp!

Following in the same vein with Friday The 13th (1980), I thought that I would mention part 2 primarily because in all honesty, the two movies just fit perfectly! Don't get me wrong, I mean the rest of the series fits in with these 2 movies as well, but the truth is, is the first two movies, when they came out, the series was new, and so the story hadn't started to get watered down yet...

It looks like Cropsy is about to come out and play!

Now this one is one that my buddy over at AwesomeBMovies.com, Matt Dowling, told me about... This one was actually kind of a fun and interesting story, about a group of kids that accidentally torch a camp caretaker in the past, and years later it looks like he might have come back to get revenge on the campers currently enjoying there experience at the camp that he used to work at!

Another interesting thing is that famous actors: Jason Alexander (Seinfeld) and, Holly Hunter (The Firm) play roles in this movie, early in their careers!

I will be honest and say that I am not the biggest fan of the, 'Synth' music movement... Don't get me wrong, it certainly has it's place, and the truth is, is that there are some good groups out there making even better songs...

Three Classic Video Games That Came Out In 1980

You know, you might be saying to yourself...Boy that is random doing a list of 5 classic video games from 1980... Why not do one for video games of all time... Well the truth is, is I suspect that I will be getting to it at some point... But for now, I think it might be kind of fun to take you guys on a walk down memory lane... A trek back to... 1980...

At number 3: Pac-Man:

Pac-Man... A true classic!

Who doesn't remember this game? I mean this video game in and of itself was still being enjoyed decades after it's initial release back in 1980! Now you might be asking yourself, why is this game so fun? It doesn't appear to be particularly hard... Well the truth is, is this game is hard! I mean the higher up in levels you go, the harder the game gets... Check it out, you might become one of the millions to have had the chance to enjoy this one!

At number 2: Centipede:

Centipede... A forgotten classic!

Another true classic... This one I wished I had been able to play in it's arcade version... From reading up on that, it seems like it would have been even better... Alas, I didn't get the opportunity... But I have played it before, and it is a fun one... And if you get a chance, give it a try, I think you might like it!

At number 1: Defender:

Boy do I miss these types of games!

Here is a game that I did have the chance to play in the Arcade... This one is an interesting one... You see, there should inherently be nothing spectacular about this game... This game is just an addictive good time... It is one of those that I found that I just had to beat! If you give it a try, you might find the same thing as well!

The Shinning (1977) - Stephen King - Book Review

You know one of the things that I like about Stephen King and his novels, is that in an of itself, each individual novel has it's own separate and distinct story line separate from the other, but in the end, his novels are set up in such a way as to permit individual story lines to connect together, and when he does so, it makes that story that much better!

With that said, there is a novel that I can't wait to read that recently came out by the master of the macabre that is actually the sequel to one of his earlier novels... This novel is called, 'Doctor Sleep', and the original being, 'The Shinning' (1977)!

Now this book truly rocks! It is one one of those novels that from just about the beginning to the end, your on the edge of your seat, and as Stephen King guides the reader deeper in to the story, you end up getting more and more on the edge of your seat, and as you follow Jack Torrance, and his descent in to madness... Well let's just put it this way... You aren't going to want to read this novel late at night!

As for the story it's this, the story tells of how the Torrance family takes over the, 'Overlook Hotel'  as the caretaker for the off season... Now this Hotel has a supernatural secret about previous caretakers, and when Jack Torrance finds out about it, his slow descent in to madness, will be something that he and his family will never forget!

As a side note that I think you might find interesting if you haven't actually seen it yet, is that in 1980 Stanley Kubrick (Full Metal Jacket) & Jack Nicholson (Little Shop Of Horrors) along with Shelley Duvall (Annie Hall) & Scatman Crothers (Transformers: The Return Of Optimus Prime) would go on to make the first and still most famous big screen adaption of the movie!

In the end guys, this book is freaking awesome, I mean the movie was good... The book was better, and if you give it a chance, I think you might really like it... I know I did!

Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back (1980) - Donald F. Glut - Book Review

You know a lot of people I think tend to discount novels based on movies, I mean it is true that movies based on books are usually not as good, but can it be true that books based on movies are as good?

Well I am hear to say that some times yes they are and some times they are not...

I hate to say it, but Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back just isn't one of them... Don't get me wrong, this novel is not all that bad, the problem is, is that Donald F. Glut did not bring anything new to this story!

What I mean by this is the fact that he did not answer any questions that people may or may not have had about the movie, and the story was basically the same...

So well I guess if you love the movie, then you might like this, I know I did enjoy it some, despite the fact that it is not inherently original, and if you give it a try you might enjoy it as well!

 

Five Great Actors And Actresses That Also Saw Success As Musicians

One of the things that I have noticed as a common theme in all facets of the entertainment industry and there are several examples of this in the world of sports as well, and that is the fact that there seems to be a lot of people that generally seem to gravitate toward doing movies and TV shows...

Well you know what, I got to thinking about those actors & actresses that saw commercial success as musicians, and there are many, but here are five great actors and actresses that also saw success as musicians!

At number 5: David Hasselhoff (Starcrash).

Today we all know Mr. Hasselhoff for his drunken antics that made it to Youtube... The Continued Relevance Of Dead Superstars

Sadly some of musics greatest most historically memorable musicians, Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson, most of the Beatles... Etc, etc... Have passed away...

It is one of those unfortunate situations in the music scene today... Don't get me wrong, there are still many great musicians out there, but in the case of who I am talking about are those people who were sort of trailblazers that made their specific genres what they are today!

These are the people with whom most musicians may have grown up listening to, but some of them were the inspiration behind a lot of the modern musicians that are around today!

There is also another side to these guys that I thought that you guys might find to be rather interesting... The fact that sometimes decades after they stopped being able to produce music, not only are these people having regular posthumous albums being made in their names, but some of them are starting to have a high number of awards and #1 hits posthumously!

A great example of this is, Elvis Presley!

Between 1977 & 1981 10 singles from the King Of Rock were released as #1 hits... Graceland has become one of the most well visited homes in the United States (just behind, 'The White House'.) And after the King passed on, he was inducted in to four different music hall of fames, including: the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame (Which he was inducted in to in 1986), the Country Music Hall Of Fame (which he was inducted in to in 1998), the Gospel Music Hall Of Fame (2001) & even the Rockabilly Hall Of Fame in 2007!

Another great example is, The Beatles... Don't get me wrong, I know that they are not all dead, but most of them are, and they have been broken up since the 1970s... But that didn't end it for these guys... You see, after the break up all four of them would continue to make music as solo artists, but not only that but they each one of them would collaborate at one time or another.

As a matter of fact, after John Lennon died in 1980, the remaining Beatles along with Linda McCartney would come together to make a tribute album in honor of their fallen friend!

And the most latest that I discovered is, 'Michael Jackson'... It looks like the King Of Pop will be back entertaining audiences one last time in his second posthumous album called, 'Xscape' which was recently release on May 2nd 2014!

Humanoids From The Deep (1980) - Movie Review

You know, I used to believe that the last great decade for horror was in the 1980s... Alas I am wrong... But there sure are some good ones though!

The truth is, is that rather or not you find the 1980s to be the last great decade for horror or not, the truth is, is there is a lot of great movies that came out then, some had great A-list (or eventual A-list talent,) some had some truly awesome B acting talent, that made whatever low budget shlock fest a totally awesome good time!

Most of these movies generally did not tend to have what the mainstream might call a, 'great' story line... but in truth, that is subjective... And let's be honest here fright fans, most of the greatest horror movies to have ever come out have had bad story lines...

Some of these horror movies have great special effects (as is the case with the later Halloween movies,) but then again some of the most kick-ass B movies around turned out to be pretty awesome, in no small part to the bad special effects!

Now you might be wondering why I am mentioning this... Well I just told you about both mainstream horror, and, 'B' horror... And the latest horror movie that I am reviewing, Humanoids From The Deep (1980) happens to be a pretty awesome b horror movie!

Written by: William Martin (The American Experience) & Directed by: Barbara Peeters (Starhops) & Jimmy T. Murakami (Battle Beyond The Stars). Starring: Doug  McClure (Twilight Zone: Mr. Denton On Doomsday), Ann Turkel (The Fear), Vic Morrow (The Glass House) & Anthony Pena (The Running Man).

This awesome exploitation flick, which was also called, 'Monster' told the story of how in the town of, 'Noyo' something terribly wrong is about to happen!

You see, Noyo up till recently had actually been a sort of a small fishing village that thrived on a dying industry, but when a big canning company decides they want to set up shop in town, things start looking up for the small town... That is until strange things started to occur... That being the fact that people have started going missing!

And it all really comes to a head when while fighting a fire that had been caused by a, 'hate crime', 'Johnny Eagle' (Anthony Pena) has come to discover something hideous having come up from the depths of the sea... And not only is this going to change the town, but the canning company that seems to be involved in this, and the women that these monsters seem to be seeking out to mate with!

It will be up to Johnny, Dr. Susan Drake (Ann Turkel) & Jim Hill (Doug McClure) to try and stop these monsters before they not only destroy the town, but so that they can protect the citizens of the small fishing village of, 'Noyo' that the monsters want most!

Now I have told you the good stuff about this movie, here is the not so good part about this movie... In this movie I found there was just to much down time... I mean if they had gotten things going a little earlier, or slightly reduced the movies time, this movie would have been almost top of it's game!

The truth is though, is the movie is pretty freaking awesome anyway, and if you check it out, you might find the same thing as well...

5 Classic Japanese Commercials For 5 Classic Video Game Systems

You know, most people may not know this, but for most of the 20th century, and even today (although not as much today, as it had been in the past), but Japan was the dominating force behind Video Games and their consoles...

Nintendo is a great example of this... Even though, 'Nintendo' and it's accompanying video games and consoles are all over the world, and are still a dominating force in American Video Gamming... 5 Classic Horror Movie For The Fright Fan Home Alone On Christmas 2013

Last year when I first started Hellinspace, I thought that I would start up a blog to help those in need for Christmas... Last year I mentioned 5 Science Fiction movies that I still believe would work really nicely for the Holidays (For more information, please click, 'Here')... Well now I thought one of the Blogs that I would do this year for Christmas would for, '5 Classic Horror Movies For The Fright Fan Home Alone On Christmas 2013'...

Admittedly... Horror movies generally are not something that one would recommend for a fun & festive holiday that is generally meant for mirth and merriment... Well the truth is, I think the old saying: 'Different Stroke For Different Blokes' definitely applies here!

What I mean by that, (and this is for those non-fright fiends that maybe looking for a good gift for the fright fans in their lives...) But horror movies generally truly do have some great horror movies that have been released that are geared around Christmas... And if you are a fan of horror (or are just looking for a solid Christmas present for one), then check this out... I think you might like it!

Number 5: Silent Night (2012).

5 Final Girls Of The 1980s That Kick Ass

Say what you will about Horror movies, one of the things that they do really well, is empowering women and girls, by showing the fact that 99% of the time it is not the, 'man' (or the hero), that is the final survivor against the, 'big bad' monster, but the girl/women that are the one's that are going up against the big bad monster in an effort to finally destroy these big bad monsters once and for all!

Now these women who end up going up against the big bad monster and finally take him or her out once and for all... Well they are called, 'Final Girls'... I think the name is pretty self explanatory... I mean they are either the last surviving member of the group that the big bad monster has been killing off one by one, or is the girl who ends up winning the final battle against the big bad monster!

And so I thought that I would mention here, '5 Final Girls Of The 1980s That Kick Ass!'

The Police - Zenyatta Mondatta: De Do Do Do De Da Da Da (1980) - Song Review

Now you may and probably are wondering why I am doing a review for a, 'Police' song...  I mean they are not exactly hard core heavy metal, rock 'n roll, or even classic rock!

Well the reason that I thought that I would do a review for a song of theirs is because  they are, 'soft rock'... Or well this song is... and I would say that is probably about closer to what they are then the harder stuff, but the truth is, is they got some truly fun songs under their belt, that are well worth a listen if you get the chance!

And as a matter of fact, I would say from their catalog would be the song: 'De Do Do Do De Da Da Da' from their 1980 album, 'Zenyatta Mondatta'!

What makes this song so great, well this song was really well defining of the Police... Which I would define as a soft rock/alternative style sound... I mean they had infused in to a lot of their songs different elements from different musical styles, and I found that I particular liked this song... (well for me it was probably because I grew up listening to it when I would visit my dad.)

But besides that I was really impressed with the work that Sting did in writing the song... (In all fairness though I think that one of the best traits of, 'The Police' and later with Sting's solo career, is the interesting way that he can create these totally off the wall songs some times, and yet make them sound completely awesome... And in some cases, poetic!)

But for this song I found it to be of particular note, because (and I could be wrong) but I kind of feel like since this was the song that helped not only introduce me to the work of a musician that I have been a fan of since I was barely out of diapers, but also it helped me see the world music beyond just the narrow minded scope of what could be defined as one's singular interests in music, and expanded my interests to the point where I can honestly say that I like most forms of music... With the exception of actual opera and country... And I hope one day to find an opera and a country music singer that I could enjoy!

In the end, if you haven't had a chance to listen to either, 'Sting' or, 'The Police' then I would recommend checking out this song, it is the one that introduced me to Sting in both his career in, 'The Police' and as a solo artist, and it might help you get in to his music as well!

Top 5 Reasons Why 'B' Sci-Fi Movies Rock!

First off let me say that the definition of a B Movie is... A B Movie is a movie that has been categorized as being a, 'bad' movie for some reason... Well I would say that, that has changed over the past few decades, what with the revolution of great classic cult films coming out of what the mainstream would consider to be a, 'Bad' Movie! And since I am a huge fan of the B Movie craze in any genre, I have taken it upon myself to do what I can to help bring these classic, 'B' Science Fiction or Horror movies to light, and give them the chance that they never got when they were initially released

With that in mind I thought I would give you guys, what i believe is the top 5 reasons why, 'B' Sci-Fi movies rock!

Number 5: Campy Special Effects!

Not always (as I feel was the case with the movie, Battle Beyond The Stars (1980),) A lot of the times B Science Fiction movies are fairly low budget and so generally tend to have some pretty campy special effects!

Number 4: Ridiculous scripts!

That's right folks... Now again this isn't all the time, but a lot of the times the script for these B Movies are pretty ridiculous, with lines for the cast that are pretty hilariously bad, and with names for people, places, and planets that are pretty Elementary school!

Number 3: Oddly bad talent!

Again, this isn't always the truth, but more often then not Science Fiction B Movies will have a couple of eventually, or at the time, big name talent that kind of make up the movie, and then their are people that you have to wonder if they are really just not good at acting or if it was intentional considering the subject matter!

Now at this point I want you to ask yourself this question... Why is a guy who obviously likes B Science Fiction Films attacking them... And these next two reasons will give you your answer!

Number 2: True talent discovered from these movies!

That's right folks, a lot of the big name talent of the last 30 years or so go their start in Campy B Movies, and look at where they are now!

Number 1: All of what I said above is just part of the charm!

What I mean by this, is that all of the bad elements and good elements that I mentioned above are, as well as so much more, are what makes up these truly awesome, 'B' Science Fiction Movies, and if you didn't have the majority or all of what makes a B Science Fiction movie so great in the B Movie you were watching, then the chances are that you are going to find that you have crap!

Ed Gein... Movies He Inspired!

Unless you are an extreme horror movie fan or some one who does research on serial killers, then I doubt you would have heard of Ed Gein...

Well first of Ed Gein is one of the worst serial killers there is, yet he is also one of the most prolific serial killers in history... Why is that? Well besides the fact that he murdered only 2 people, and besides the fact that Ed Gein was more or less obsessed with his mother, he was also known to have made furniture and what not out of human body parts, as well as also having been known to have started making a woman costume out of human skin, to arrange some strange rituals... And yet he was a nice guy that lived as a hermit out in the middle of no where... Sound familiar?

It should, you see, one of the biggest contributions that Ed Gein contributed to the world, is what he contributed to the horror movie genre!

The first of these movies is, Psycho (1960), you see this movie was based on the book by author Robert Bloch who based his story mostly on Ed Gein's case, in that Psycho told the story of a reclusive young man by the name of, 'Norman Bates', who lived out at his mostly empty Motel, and who was obsessed with his overly possessive mother, and how after he kills a woman one night, the world that he had created for himself, had started spiraling out of control!

The next one that I thought that I would mention here is, Three On A Meathook (1974). Now this is another movie that is loosely based on the story of Ed Gein, with the exception that it appears that the mother is no longer in the picture, and the father appears to become obsessed with the son, when the son starts pulling away!

And another one that I thought that I would mention here (One of the first movies that maybe the first most closest adaptions of the old Ed Gein story), a movie that I found to be a lot of fun, (and if you are huge B Horror fan I think you might to), that movie is, Deranged: Confessions Of A Necrophile (1974). This movie tells the story about how after the death of the mother that he loved so dearly, that this old hermit farmer, becomes a grave robber and murderer, and even goes so far to try and keep and preserve his mother's corpse!

The next movie that I thought that I would say is more closely based on the story of Ed Gein is not so much a movie as it is a character in a movie, and that is the character of, 'Jame (Buffalo Bill) Gumb' (Played by: Ted Levine) from the award winning movie, Silence Of The Lambs (1991), a movie which has FBI trainee, 'Clarice Starling' (Played by: Jodie Foster) and how she enlisted the help of a captured serial killer in an effort to capture a serial killer by the name of, 'Buffalo Bill' a loner, that is kidnapping women in an effort to make a woman suit out of the women that he has murdered... And has gotten the FBI's attention when his latest kidnapping victim is the daughter of U.S. Senator!

The last one that I wanted to mention here is, Ed Gein: D.D.S. (2013). Now this movie hasn't been released yet, but this movie will tell the story of how a witches coven will resurrect Ed Gein using an old haunted dental chair that had been taken from the Hospital that he spent the last years of his life at.

And then of course there are the movies that are actually bio-pics of Ed Gein and his story, included in this is:

1. Ed Gein (2000), a movie which stars, Steve Railsback (Disturbing Behavior) as Gein.

2. Ed Gein: The Ghoul Of Plainfield (2004) a documentary on Gein himself.

3. Ed Gein: The Butcher Of Plainfield (2007) a horror movie that stars, Kane Hodder (Jason X)

4. Ed Gein: The Musical (2010) a movie which stars Dan Davies (West Of The Thunder)

The last area that I thought that I would mention here are just a few movies that took some element of Ed Gein and what he did for their film:

1. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) used Gein as the inspiration for, 'Leatherface', as well as the fact that Leatherface and his creepy family are on a creepy out of the way farm that is decorated with furniture that was made from Human remains.

2. Motel Hell (1980), used the whole creepy killer farmer element that lives almost entirely out in the middle of no where, and kills people!

3. Maniac (1980) a movie that used the fact that the killer in this movie had an abusive mother, and that is why he kills women he deemed, 'un-clean'.

4. Ed And His Dead Mother (1993) in this movie the lead character who is mourning the loss of his mother that he has lived his entire life with, dies and ultimately he has brought back to life!

5. Roadkill: The Last Days of John Martin (1994) tells the story of a crazy meat carver who lives on a farm by himself and goes out and kills people with car trouble for food... He also has an ornamental dead head.

6. House Of 1,000 Corpse (2003), now I suspect that when Rob Zombie was making this film, that he utilized the fact that Ed Gein would dress up in a woman suit and would dance in bizarre rituals at night as inspiration in this movie for the moment in the movie when the family dresses up (in real costumes) to sacrifice the remaining people that they had captured to, 'Doctor Satan'!
