Mega Box Office Hit Movies That Don't Do Well When Converted To TV

Have you ever noticed that there seems to be a weird trend in Hollywood in which movies that do extremely well in the Theater, and do even better when they make it to Blu-Ray or DVD, and I would go on to say make it in to American Pop Culture as icons... And in some cases I would go on to say have some element of being iconic of America... Yet these movies that for some reason seem to almost one for one always seem to tank when they are converted to TV shows?

The Terminator is one of the most famous science fiction movies of all time, yet died with out so much as a whimper as a, 'TV Show', Go figure...

Why is that? I mean there are some movies like, The Terminator (1984) that with that movie as well as it's numerous sequels have been entertaining audiences for decades! So why when this movie was turned in to a TV series with some actors and actresses that are and were big names when the TV show was still on the air, such talent as, Lena Headley (Game Of Thrones), Summer Glau (Firefly) & Garrett Dillahunt (Looper), and yet this show tanked?

Well I have to be honest with you guys and say that I actually have no idea as to why that show tanked... I haven't seen it, but that is just one example that I was trying to give to you guys...

Another one being: Freddy's Nightmares (1988 - 1990):

Freddy's Nightmares... Based an a historically significant horror movie series... Bombed as a TV series... Go Figure...

This show, which was a weekly anthology horror series, and which was based on the, 'A Nightmare On Elm Street' series, had a pool of amazingly talented horror movie stars to choose from (Not to mention the fact that Robert Englund brought his role of, 'Freddy Krueger' to the small screen as the host of the series.) It also had some fun special effects, that may not have been quite up to horror movie standards for the time, but it  truly was not bad... And lastly, the stories for each segment were truly top drawer!

And the last thing that I wanted to say was the fact that this franchise was at the height of it's fame in the 1980s... So why did it tank?

Well I can't say for certain, I have been kind of unsuccessful  in trying to find out why this show went off the air when it did... If I had to say though, I would say that it is the, 'Nielsen Ratings' that did... I mean after all they are pretty well known for killing off most of the TV shows that are good, and leaving us with the scraps!

Either way folks, if you haven't had chance to check these shows out, you might give them a try... I can't vouch for the, 'Terminator' TV series, but I can say that, 'Freddy's Nightmares' is an awesome show, and is one of those that ultimately was cut down in it's prime!

The Prequel... It's Importance In Movies

Don't get me wrong I mean the original series of movies are always fantastic, and even after decades and (well this is true in horror movies...) But after the first one starts to loose it's relevance to the overall series... But the truth is, is there is an element of both Science Fiction and Horror movies that are great that uptil recently seems to have been ignored in favor of a remake... That is the Prequel!

Now you might be wondering why the prequel is so important... Well in the case of horror movies, the prequel kind of it seems takes the place of remakes real nicely... And well let's be honest, a lot of people would say that horror movie remakes for the most part pretty well suck... Well I would agree with them that there is an inordinate amount of crap out there, but where as not all remakes have the capacity to stand on their own, a lot of prequels (as long as they are done right,) tend to be able to stand on their own!

A great example of this I have recently discovered is, Prometheus (2012)!

Prometheus... A great prequel to an amazing movie series!

Now I will be honest with you guys and say that, Prometheus is not as good as the original Ridley Scott (Blade Runner) vehicle, (The truth is, is they just don't make movies at that caliber anymore...) Never the less, this movie is an absolutely fun time, and helps bring in to focus certain plot hole elements that have periodically surfaced through out the run of the first four movies.

Now let me ask you guys this, if Ridley Scott had decided to remake his classic original movie instead of turning the movie in to an awesome prequel, would, Prometheus have been as good as it turned out to be?

The answer is most definitive no! I can't predict the future, but the truth is, is that there is no actress or actor on the planet right now that could have brought to the character of, 'Ellen Ripley', that Sigourney Weaver (Ghostbusters), brought to the world (I am not saying this because I am a fan of her work... I am saying this for the same reason that Jackie Earle-Haley just couldn't bring to, 'Freddy Krueger' what Robert Englund (Urban Legends) did!)

Jackie Earle Haley may be a great actor... But when it comes to, 'Freddy Krueger'... Robert Englund will always be the master!

Before I continue on, let me explain what I mean...

If you are a fan of the, 'Nightmare movies' then you have seen all of the original series in which, 'Robert Englund' dominated the role of, 'Freddy Krueger'! A few years ago, instead of doing another sequel, it was decided to do a remake of the first movie, and to bring in, Jackie Earle Haley (Watchmen) to replace Robert Englund as, 'Freddy Krueger'!

Ultimately that decision proved to be a pretty awful one, considering the fact that the movie was a box office flop, and there not only has not been another Nightmare movie that has come out, but it looks like there is not going to be another to come out any time in the near future!

Ultimately I guess what I am trying to say is this... Prequels in the whole (as long as they are done right), keep to the continuity of the original story line real nicely, and even if they end up loosing the main talent for that movie, over all, story wise it should be a fun experience!

Robert Englund Discusses Freddy Krueger's Voice

As Freddy Krueger, actor Robert Englund (Zombie Mutation) has created a character that even by today (It appears that he has retired his participation in the role,) is still one of the most famous horror movie villains of all time...

The reason that I mention this is that one of the  signature attributes to his, 'Freddy Krueger', is his signature laugh! We here recently discovered an interview that Robert Englund did in which he discusses the signature laugh!

A Nightmare On Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge (1985) - Movie Review

Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund)... I would say that as far as icons go, that Freddy Krueger is as influential, as say, 'Tom Sawyer' in the 19th century and the, 'Three Muketeers' in the 17th century...

I know that may sound odd... But it is true, I mean he is one of the figures that came out in the 20th century that in a lot of ways is extremely recognizable for the latter half of the 20th  century... As a matter of fact, at one point this character was so popular that it was acceptable to have their children wear costumes that were created based on that character!

I hate to say it though, but where as, A Nightmare Elm Street (1984) was truly fantastic, A Nightmare On Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge (1985), while being good, just wasn't as good!

This first sequel tells the story of how about 5 years after the events of the first movie, Nancy Thompson's house has finally been sold to a nice family... In this family is the father, 'Ken Walsh' (Clu Gulager), the mother, 'Cheryl Walsh' (Hope Lange), Angela Walsh (Christie Clarke) & there son, 'Jesse Walsh' (Mark Patton).

Now Jesse is just starting to fit in, he has made friends with, 'Ron Grady' (Robert Rusler), and is about to hook up with Lisa Webber (Kim Myers)... The problem is, is that there is an old house guest that is about to rejoin the party and has Jesse do some things that he may not really want to do!

And in the end, it will take the love of a good woman to stop Freddy this time, before he can make Jesse kill to many people!

In the end, this movie does have it's moment, I mean the chemistry between Mark Patton and Kim Myers was really awesome... There is also a scene at a party that is a lot of fun as well!

The main problem that I had with this movie is that the level of homosexual references is just a little to much...

Despite all else though, this movie may not be as good as the first one, but it is a fun one!

The Many Faces Of, 'Leatherface' And The Men Who Played Him

Believe it or not, with the exception of Freddy Krueger (who has uptil the recent remake has been played by: Robert Englund), and Norman Bates, (who til it's remake had always been played by: Anthony Perklins,) most long standing horror movie villains have been played by several different actors.

A good example of this is, 'Kane Hodder' (Hatchet)... Now Kane Hodder had up until recently been kind of universally recognized as the actor who played, 'Jason Voorhees' in the, 'Friday The 13th' movies... The only thing is, is that he didn't start playing the role till around part 7, and there were at least a couple of actors who played the role before him, and played them after him!

Well I got to thinking that you guys might enjoy a look back at the many looks of ,'Leatherface' over the years, (another role that has been played by many actors,) and the actors that played him!

In the end, this series is pretty awesome, and if you are like me, then you are really looking forward to what comes next!

The Main Mistake When Remaking Horror Movies...

As we all know, Hollywood, for about the last decade or so, has been remaking just about everything that has ever come out... With a special emphasis on remaking horror movies...

I have wondered why this is... I mean is it because they are out of ideas? Or maybe Hollywood in it's bid to continue to suck out every cent that they could out of some of horror's most classic horror movie franchises (like, 'Friday The 13th', or 'A Nightmare On Elm Street'... Just to name a few.)

Well for whatever the reasons that maybe, there is one thing that they have mostly done wrong when it comes to trying to remake these movies... In my opinion it is one of the biggest mistakes that they have made... It is a mistake that they don't always make... But they do often make... That is, the choices that the studios make for the people they hire to write the story for the remade masterpiece!

Now you might be asking, 'why is that so important?' I imagine some of you are probably thinking, 'that's nonsense... The biggest problem is the fact that they over CGI everything!' Well, to that last one I will say that it is definitely one of the problems, but in my opinion the writing is the main problem!

As for the writers themselves... Well, for the most part, they are in-and-of-themselves not bad writers... I'm just not convinced that all of them are fans of the genre, or fans of the original movies that they are trying to remake... You have to have that if you are going to have a successful remake!

A couple of good examples of this are:

1. A Nightmare On Elm Street (2010)... Let's be honest here... This movie stunk, as far as a remake goes, this movie was virtually killed off a legendary series that had for itself created: 7 sequels, a TV series, helped launch the careers of a lot of A list celebrities, including: Johnny Depp (Pirates Of The Caribbean: The Curse Of The Black Pearl), Breckin Meyer (Rat Race) and Patricia Arquette (True Romance) as well as having created tons of media in just about every venue... I mean Freddy Krueger was a house hold name... but when the remake came out that all pretty much has gone to pot, with no new, 'Nightmare' movies currently being released!

2. Friday The 13th (2009), in all truth, I thought that this movie was better then the, 'Nightmare' remake, but again... This movie series was a house hold name because of it's popularity, and since the release of the remake movie, has not seen another, 'Friday' movie on the horizon!

Now I have heard rumors of sequels coming out someday... But then again I have also heard rumors of Halloween 3 supposedly starting production since 2009 as well!

Either way, the main reason that I think that these movies tanked is because of the story! I mean don't get me wrong... If you are like me, then you probably had a hard time getting past the fact that Robert Englund (Urban Legends) was no longer, 'Freddy'... But, Friday The 13th, really did not have that excuse... And story wise was just not as good (I mean they tried to rely on the success of the, 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre' remake for this movie scene wise... And they tried to change the basic makeup of, 'Jason' himself... To say the least... A big mistake!)

Now I have shown you the negative side... I wanted to show you the positive side as well with Rob Zombie (House Of 1,000 Corpses) did with his remake!

Before I go on... Let me say this, Rob Zombie is a true fan of the Halloween series, (he has mentioned it in a few of the interviews that I have seen him do about the, 'Halloween' movies,) with that in mind, it shows!

Mainly I say this because I personally believe that Rob Zombie took the story to such an extreme that not only was it fun, but I felt it really honored the original vision of John Carpenter (The Ward) and Mr. Carpenter's vision for the original movie!

Well if you haven't seen it yet, I won't say to much, just to say that, John Carpenter's original 1978 classic, 'Halloween' movie is my favorite movie, but I also thoroughly enjoyed Rob Zombie's version as well!

5 Classic Horror Shows That Were Canceled To Early

In the world of TV, just as in the world of movies, they tend to gravitate more toward Drama/Comedy/Chick Flick style movies or TV shows, a great example of this is the fact that, 'Beverly Hills 90210' a great teen drama that lasted for about a decade was on longer than, 'Star Trek: Deep Space Nine'...

Now don't get me wrong, both are great shows in their own right, and in all truth and fairness, most of the bigger named Science Fiction or Horror TV Programs out there do tend to last at least 5 seasons (a pretty good run considering that most of the time these shows that go on for at least 5 seasons get at least a 100 hundred episode run if not more.)

In this case I suppose more what I am talking about is those shows that didn't make it very far but should have!  Like do you remember the show, 'Cult'? Didn't last very long, but a fun show about a TV Program and how it, and it's creator influences a group of obsessed devotee's  that are looking for something specific from the past? Of course not! I mean the  show lasted less then a regular season... And you know what? That show is a show that aired earlier this year!

But I digress and apologize, I didn't mean to rant, all I meant to say is that I thought I would do this list to remind fans of some classic horror TV that was canceled well before it's time!

And for number 5: Point Pleasant (2005 - 2006)

This awesome TV series tells the story of how after a mysterious teenage girl ends up arriving in, 'Point Pleasant', a small coastal town in New Jersey, where she is taken in by an unassuming family, but the longer she stays in this town, the more she finds out the truth about herself, and who her dark mysterious father really is!

Now this show was freaking awesome, and one could almost say is a new take on, 'The Omen', but was canceled way to early and replaced with a show that didn't make it either!

For number 4: Freddy's Nightmares (1988 - 1990).

This one is an interesting one, you see this show is loosely based on Wes Craven's, 'A Nightmare On Elm Street' movie series, which was mocked up sort of similar to the old, 'Alfred Hitchcock Presents' anthology show, in which Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund) would come on and introduce the stories for the show...

I will admit that I have not seen to many episodes of this series (it doesn't air a lot on TV and I have as of yet been able to find it on Netflix, but the few episodes I have seen are a lot of fun, and it is just a shame that this show did not last beyond it's 2 season run!

At number 3: Night Stalker (2005):

Now here is another truly awesome series that had a strong backing (considering that this is a remake of the classic tv series, 'Kolchack: The Night Stalker' but did not end up lasting to long!

You see this show which also had a great cast, including: Stuart Townsend (Queen Of The Damned) as: Carl Kolchak, an investigative reporter whom after his wife dies, ends up investigating her murder through the strange murders of other people that he believes whose deaths are linked to the murder of his wife! Helping him on this is, Gabrielle Union (Bring It On) who plays, 'Perri Reed' another investigative reporter, as well as a few other from their newspaper!

At number 2: Millennium (1996 - 1999)

Admittedly this show has lasted longer then all of the other ones that I have mentioned above... But the reason that I decided to add this series in here is because this show was so abused and mistreated when it was having it's run that every time it was just about to hit the marks and really become something truly amazing, the shows producers seemingly felt like they would have to knock it back down!

What I mean by this, is that this show which took the lead character, who was a retired FBI Agent with seeming special insight in to the mind of a killer, and how initially he worked for a group of seeming retired investigators that consulted on crimes, but seemed to have a greater agenda that in the end, the lead character tried to stop, and destroy the organization got off to a great and creepy fun start in season 1, as a matter of fact I would say that season 1 is probably one of the more memorable seasons of strictly horror TV show to be released in the late 1990s!

But then comes season 2... I won't bore you with the details except to say that it sucked! But then comes season 3... Admittedly that season took a little bit to completely get the show back on track, and just when season 3 was just starting to get really good, and had a strong potential to make the show really something, they ended the series with an episode that really sucked!

In the end, the only saving grace for this series was the crossover that had Lance Henriksen (Aliens) and Brittany Tiplady (The Pledge) who played his daughter, guest star on an episode of, 'The X-Files'

And finally at number 1: Brimstone (1998 - 1999).

I am going to be honest with you guys and say that where as all of the shows that I mentioned above were awesome, this show for me was truly spectacular that watched and re-watched a few times when the show first aired and when it went on sporadic re-runs!

This amazing show which starred: Peter Horton (Children Of The Corn) John Glover (RoboCop 2), and Lori Petty (Point Break) and which told the story of how after killing the man who raped his wife and then getting murdered himself, a Detective (Horton) is given a second chance by the Devil (John Glover) is given a second chance at redemption when he is asked to rescue a group of damned souls who have figured out a way to escape from Hell!

In the end, this is one of those few shows that I am still bummed out that it got canceled after only 1 season!

Freddy Vs. Freddy: Who's Better?

Now I have been watching horror movies since I was in the early single digits (about as far back as I can remember, I saw, A Nightmare On Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987)... to understand (I was about 5 years old when I saw this movie, and I have been told stories of seeing horror movies even younger!)

So with that in mind I have been a horror fan for literally almost my entire life, and one of those movies that I have remembered all these years and have seen periodically is the one I mentioned above... It had great special effects, a great story, and an awesome cast... And speaking of cast...

I kind of grew up watching, A Nightmare On Elm Street movies, and one for one, Robert Englund (Urban Legends), has done a great job playing the amazingly creepy, 'Freddy Krueger'...

Now for those of you who don't know who Freddy Krueger is, the character was the, 'Son Of 100 Maniacs' and ended up being the killer through out the, 'A Nightmare On Elm Street' series, as an almost demonic trickster who seemed to really enjoy getting revenge on the parents on Elm Street who killed him by killing their kids!

Well Robert Englund did a great job playing this trickster in such a way that for some would be truly scary, but for others would just be pretty awesome (I mean with his glove he is a pretty awesome villain).

Well with that said, a few years ago, and with the seeming un-ending rush of remakes and reboots, New Line decided to remake the first, A Nightmare On Elm Street movie...

Of course this movie was universally condemned and seems to have condemned the series to obscurity, what with since it's fall in the theaters in 2010, a sequel hasn't surfaced and doesn't appear to be doing so any time in the near future...

With that in mind though, I will admit that even though I can definitely see how this movie could be considered to be, 'bad', I didn't think this movie was all that great either, but I was glad to have been able to have said that I have seen this movie!

I thought that with a continuing series of which character is better from the original or the remake, I thought that I would pose this question, Freddy Vs. Freddy, Who's Better?

Now for Robert Englund his pros and cons as Freddy Krueger are as follows:

1. In the first movie he was a truly demonic entity that was terrorizing teenagers on Elm Street for a truly mysterious reason and it appeared that he was an unstoppable killing machine and there was no way these teens were going to survive!

2. He perfected the glove with knives attached to it, and made it cool!

3. He also managed (in my opinion really up to part 5... but that was more the fault I think of the writers then him), to have this sort of awesome demonic presence that was more of a job that he really enjoyed.

4. Also in all honesty his burn scars were cooler then in the remake!

5. I thought that I would mention the laugh. Robert Englund's version of the laugh is so megalomaniacally cool, that it is just unforgettable!

6. The chemistry to some extent between Freddy & Nancy from the original movie series vs the Freddy & Nancy from the remake seemed more real to me.

7. Lastly, he made Freddy what he is, in the hearts and minds of people all over the world!

Cons:

1. At the beginning of the series, Freddy is getting his revenge on the Elm Street families to make right his murder, vs the eventual methodical job like way that he killed children just for the sake of killing them.

2. I also preferred the more shriveled up burnt demon like Freddy, more then the refined burn victim he would become in successive movies!

Jackie Earle Haley as Freddy: Pros & Cons.

Pros:

1. Jackie Earle Haley plays Freddy in this movie more like how Robert Englund did it in part 1 of the original series, but instead of being more methodical and demonic, it was more like a psycho path that some how became super natural.

2. I also felt that Jackie Earle Haley brought to the character what had been lost over the years in what Freddy was originally intended to be... I mean over the successive sequels Freddy remained scary, but as the sequels got more campy... I felt that Freddy only seemed to scare like 4 year old girls... In this case I felt like Jackie Earle Haley brought the respectably creepy killer back to the world that was written out of the character slowly over the years!

Cons:

1. I know Jackie Earle Haley was trying to make Freddy more it's own character, the signature moves that have been a staple of the character for decades he either didn't do or didn't do right!
2. Also the character looked just off enough to make it almost seemed like he wasn't a burn victim, but some one with some light scarring!

In the end, I liked both actors playing this character, but I have to admit that my favorite though was Robert Englund... The first and still the best!

A Nightmare On Elm Street (1984) - Movie Review

A Nightmare On Elm Street.... Now this one I've loved literally since I was able to talk! You see, when I was young my Dad was a huge fan of horror movies, and one of the earliest horror movies (movies in general) that I can remember seeing is this one, (As a matter of fact the earliest movie I can remember seeing in general was, A Nightmare On Elm Street: The Dream Warriors).

And so it is with great pride that I am able to review, A Nightmare On Elm Street (1984)!

Written and Directed by: Wes Craven (Scream). Starring: Heather Langenkamp (Shocker), Johnny Depp (Secret Window), Amanda Wyss (Dexter), Jsu Garcia (Candyman: Day Of The Dead), Robert Englund (Dee Snider: Strangeland), John Saxon (Blood Beach), and Ronee Blakley (The Driver).

This legendary horror movie starts off the legend of, 'Freddy Krueger'...

You see, when Freddy Krueger was alive, he used to terrorize families in the town of Springwood by killing their children... Of course that is until he gets caught!

Now the problem is that after he is arrested by the Police, he ends up being released on a technicality! This ends up enraging some of the parents in Springwood. So the parents end up chasing Kruger down and torching him in the building that he used to kill children in!

Now the parents of Springwood can rest easy... Or so they think!

You see Nancy Thompson (Langenkamp), and her friends, Glen Lentz (Depp), Tina Gray (Wyss), Rod Lane (Garcia), are all being terrorized by horrible nightmares...

That would be cool if that's all that it was but, when the kids start dropping like flies when they are in bed... the question becomes, 'Is the curse of Freddy Krueger back to haunt the people of Springwood'?

This movie set the path for a lot of horror movie legends out there. A couple of examples of this of course being the work that Wes Craven has done for Dimension. Robert Englund's long time work in the horror genre, as well as to put New Line Cinema on the map in a major and long term way in the horror field, what with eventually picking up the rights to the Friday The 13th franchise from Paramount, as well as all of the other horror movies that they have produced since A Nightmare On Elm Street came out!

Now this movie would go on to produce six individual sequels, a remake, and the only crossover to date, in horror movie history when Freddy Krueger battled Jason Voorhees in Freddy Vs. Jason (2003).

For all of you new horror movie fans out there, this one would be a good one to introduce yourself to horror with! And for the rest of you guys, this one is a fun one to get back to as well!
