Jason Goes To Hell: The Final Friday (1993)

Now I am not the kind of guy that generally speaking, advocates a formulaic Horror/Sci-Fi Movie, or just movie in general... I mean I am a huge fan of originality when it comes to the movies that I watch… But I have learned in the past 15 years or so, since I really started getting in to Horror and Science Fiction movies in the whole, that sometimes a little tradition in a movie is actually a good thing…

I learned this when I first started watching one of the Friday The 13th movies each year for Halloween, and realized that although that it is true that the heroes and heroines in these movies are  important... But that at least as far as the Friday The 13th franchise goes, that it really is Jason and Mrs. Voorhees and the hell they went through, and the bloody swath they cut across Camp Crystal Lake (Camp Blood) for decades!

Believe it or not, I discovered this when I watched a Friday The 13th movie that didn’t have Jason in it, and realized that it was nowhere near as good as any of the movies in this series that came before or after it… This movie of course being, Jason Goes To Hell: The Final Friday (1993):

Written by: Jay Huguely (Magnum P.I.) and Adam Marcus (Who also directed the movie). Starring: John D. LeMay (Friday The 13th: The TV Series), Kari Keegan (Mind Games), Kane Hodder (Jason X), Steven Williams (21 Jump Street), Steven Culp (Thirteen Days), Erin Gray (Silver Spoons), Rusty Schwimmer (Twister), Leslie Jordan (The Help) and Kipp Marcus (Aisle Six).

Now believe it or not, one of the truly great things about this movie, is that it has John D. LeMay in it… The reason that I mention him is the fact that LeMay had been in Friday The 13th: The TV Series, (A series in the late 80s that had been created by Frank Mancuso Jr. (Who helped create the original Friday The 13th movie), and was actually A great TV series that did not have Jason Voorhees in it!)

The movie it self is a descent enough Saturday Midnight Monster Shock Fest for TV, that tells the story of how after being murdered by an FBI sting operation, Jason Voorhees decides to come back to life by willing the coroner of the local morgue to eat Jason’s original heart… (which of course he does so!)

After this is done though, Jason ends up cutting a bloody swath through the whole of Crystal Lake as he tries to make it to his half sister (It is never fully explained, but I suspect that this half sister is Jason’s father’s daughter, but not Mrs. Voorhee’s daughter.) Now he does this because he has to impregnate her (Don’t worry, it is strange, but it is not necessarily some strange sex act).

You see the way it works is through a Voorhees Jason was born, and if he dies, through another Voorhees will he be re-born…

But when is half-sister dies, her daughter and grand daughter are in town and it will be up to the daughter (Keegan) and her ex-boyfriend Steven (LeMay) to protect Jason’s sister’s daughter and grand-daughter from Jason’s attempt to impregnate one of them and being reborn as the evil incarnate that he is!

In the end, this entry I hate to say, because I love this series, has a bland and somewhat weird story line, and is definitely not a good entry in to the series, but unless you’re a fan of the whole series, then I don’t recommend watching this movie… It just isn’t very good!

Friday The 13th (2009) - Movie Review

Remakes are an interesting can of worms, you see, you would think that they would use some bit of technology that when the original movie did not have, or would add something that the original filmmakers forgot to put in, and that would make it better, right?

Well sadly, it usually doesn't, I mean for me it doesn't make the movie better, but actually worse, just worse in a way where if the movie was a stand alone it could be good, but as a connected film to a masterpiece it usually sucks.

The reason that I mention this is because, Friday The 13th (2009), as a stand alone would have been fun! A great example of this is, 'Jason Voorhees', as the killer in the original Friday The 13th movies, he is almost more of a supernatural monster then a regular killer... In the remake he is this weird sort of maniac animal that is always wearing a hockey mask...

Another great example of all of this is the fact that they still never really explain why after Jason some how ends up making it out of the lake, why he is still obsessed with his mother, but never ends up making it back to her, I mean in the original I always assumed that there was some sort of supernatural reason why he came back to life and never ended up coming back to his mother... But in the remake they pretty much openly admit that he is still alive but is living out his life as weird sort of hermit!

Also, in the remake movie, it seems like the entire town of, 'Crystal Lake' knows about Jason and his killing spree, but are not interested in doing anything about it... Weird huh?

But that is the bad stuff, the truth is, is there is some good stuff to, I liked the cast, and how they had the classic group of friends who came to Crystal Lake for the weekend and end up all getting killed off... I liked Jared Padalecki (Supernatural) and the work that he did as the concerned brother who is just trying to rescue his sister, and ends up along with Danielle Panabaker (Mr. Brooks) fighting against the big bad monster in the final battle...

And in all truth you guys, this movie is not the greatest movie I have ever seen, and as a connected movie to the, 'Friday The 13th' series this movie is not one of the best of the lot...  But in all truth, the direction that the series was taking had this movie really going the only way that it could... I wish that they did better, but they didn't, so fair enough, if you are a fan of the series you may not love this movie, but I do think it will keep you interested in the series, and if you are new to it, well... Enjoy!

Top 5 Films For Halloween 2012

With Halloween coming up real quick, and with the release of Hellinspace.com, A friend of mine and CEO of AwesomeBMovies.com, Matt Dowling helped give me this great idea for doing my top 5 choices for Halloween…

At Number 5: Slumber Party Massacre (1982):

The name may not win some people over, but the truth is, is this is a great scary Corman/slasher that is really worth sinking your teeth in to!

Number 4: Friday The 13th (1980):

Come on, you know I had to put it in there… I mean it is a truly genuine classic horror fest that is definitely worth watching on Halloween!

Number 3: The Changling (1980):

A truly great paranormal classic that I do think you guys might truly enjoy!

Number 2: The Pit And The Pendulum (1961):

A great Vincent Price classic that was based on an Edgar Allan Poe novel and has some great scares in it!

And finally, for number 1 we got: Halloween (1978):

The truth is folks, is that this movie is my absolute all-time favorite movie in general… And let’s be honest here… The name says it all!
