Disturbed: This Moment (2011) - Song Review

I will be honest and say that I really like Disturbed... They are a great heavy metal band that actually gave me a lot of hope in a world that has been awash in popular music that includes teeny bopper singers that are meant to get 14 year old girls excited, (take that anyway you want... And trust me when I say that you are probably right... Sad!)

But for headbangers like myself from way back, seeing the downfall of great music in the late 90s through the early part of the new millennium was not only sad, but it was maddening, and thus I was glad to find bands like, 'Disturbed'... Now I will be honest and say that I was pretty sad to see that they have kind of gone on to other projects... Still they do rock!

I must say that, 'The Moment', from their album, 'The Lost Children' (2011), may not be the best, but it is not bad!

'This Moment' may not be the best song they have done, but it certainly is not the worst!

 Don't get me wrong, this song is fun, and it is cool that it was used in the soundtrack to, Transformers (2007), but it didn't have that pulse pounding element that most of the rest of their songs have... Most of their songs are like a watching a good horror movie or reading a good horror novel in and of itself, but this song is sort of like, 'listening to the end credits...' Definitely worth listening to if you like to wait for everyone else to leave the theater first... But otherwise kind of useless...

Top Five Killer Disturbed Songs

You know I will be honest and say that I have only gotten in to the music of, 'Disturbed' recently... The truth is though, is that this band that has been around since the 90s and is pretty bad ass!

The reason that I say this is the fact that there sound is truly spectacular, I mean they seem anyway to me to take the best part of a lot of heavy metal bands of the 90s, including: Metallica & Marilyn Manson as well as Nine Inch Nails, and turn that in to a sound that is all there own!

So for those of you guys who are fans, I thought you guys would enjoy this, and for those of you haven't heard them yet... Well I thought that you guys would enjoy the 5 songs that I would consider to be the top 5 best songs they have ever made! So enjoy!

At number 5: Indestructible (2008), from the album with the same title.

For  number 4:  Asylum (2010), from the album with the same title.

The next one on the block at number 3: The Night (2009), from the album, 'Indestructible'.

At number 2: Warrior (2010), a song that is also from the album, 'Asylum'.

And last but not least, at number 1: Meaning Of Life (2000), from the album, 'The Sickness'.

Elvis Presley: One Of The Ancestors Of The Modern Metal Musicians

That's right folks, you might not think it, but it is true... You see, in a lot of respects, in the past Heavy Metal music has tended to be offensive to those who would prefer, 'Disco' or other forms of more easier listening music...

A great example of this is there was a TV series that I was watching a few years back that had been based in the 1970s, and during the episode there is a major fight that breaks out between people that were very clearly fans of Disco, (all the way to those strange looking suits and their overly large hairdos on guys...) And the metal heads of the time (they were more defined by the more sloppy look...)

And so you might be wondering why I have added Elvis Presley songs in to the reviews for music that I have done for music since I expanded the site... Well the simple truth is that in a lot of respects you can say that the music of, 'Elvis Presley' is a direct ancestor of heavy metal music, and that a lot of the building blocks that made him the, 'King of Rock' is what helped make Heavy Metal and keeps it being so great!

A great example of this is, that with Elvis Presley when he was around and was still a sex symbol, he was regularly producing music that the older generation, (those who were almost certainly more a fan of stuff like, 'Big Band' music) just did not like it and found offensive!

Now for me it was a little bit different (Believe it or not, my mother is a metal head from way back, and my father is more of a fan of the soft rock stuff that I enjoy as well!) But to this day I have heard that a lot of the, 'Disco Generation', that are starting to head toward senior citizen life, just really don't like it!

Another great example of that the instrumentals used in Elvis Presley's more famous (yet harder), music could be said to be lighter but similar in tone to what the more darker Heavy Metal music would be!

And one last thing that I thought that I would mention here is the themes in which Elvis would use for his more heavier songs, and the ones that are used in more modern day metal songs... Now the truth is, is Elvis's music is lighter then say, 'Disturbed's' music, but the one thing that they use a lot is alternative themes... A great example of this is Disturbed's song, 'Asylum'... A song that has to do with the problems of insanity and being forcibly institutionalized, and Elvis's 'Heartbreak Hotel' (which as I understand it, is actually based on a suicide case that the King had read about...)

In the end, if you have ever wondered where Heavy Metal music comes from... Well I can't say that Elvis is exclusively responsible, but I will say that the work that he did, was definitely an ancestor of the music that all of us metal heads have grown to love!

Disturbed: Asylum (2010) - Song Review

There are very few modern heavy metal bands that impress me in the same way as those that came before them... I mean I will be honest and say that there seemed to be some sort of fundamental shift in just how heavy metal music was done... Well that is why I was so glad to discover, 'Disturbed'!

You see Disturbed it seems, has adopted a lot of the same principal styles that made groups like, 'Metallica' so great... (Including stuff like, 'speed metal', elements of, 'death core metal', as well as just your basically all American, 'kick you in the ass' bad-ass heavy metal!)

And one song that this exemplifies in my opinion is, 'Asylum' (2010)!

This song in my opinion is great! I thought the themes of, 'man's cruelty to man' was absolutely brilliant! I found the lyrics to be a surprisingly good time... But not just that, I found this song to be very reminiscent of Metallica's, 'Welcome Home Sanitarium'... A song whose theme's closely match that of, 'Disturbed's', 'Asylum'!

In the end, this song is a lot of fun, and well worth listening to if you are like me, 'A metal head'... I liked it, and you might as well!

Disturbed - Asylum: Warrior (2010) - Song Review

Now I will admit that I am still relatively new to  Disturbed's music, I only happen to have discover it, because I happen to over here some of one song about a year to year and a half ago, and I have to admit that I was pretty intrigued by what I had heard, I mean I hadn't heard a sound like that since the 90s since such bands as, Rob Zombie or even Metallica... which is kind of ironic, because I would say to some extent that they have a sound that was inspired by both of those bands, as well a little bit from White Zombie and I suspect Alice In Chains as well (although those last 2 more in content inspiration then sound inspiration)...

Regardless, I have to admit that I was pretty blown away by the music that I had heard of theirs, and one of the first songs that I heard of theirs from their album, Asylum (2010) pretty solid was the song, 'Warrior'

One of the best things that I found with this song is the fact that this song as pretty kick ass beat to it!

Now I have listened to several songs of theirs from at least a few different albums now, and I will admit that I have listened to a few duds that they have done, and this songs definitely beats out those, but the truth is, is that I have also listen to more then a few truly amazing songs of theirs as well and I have to admit that those songs are better (and I also hate to admit it, but some of those songs are on the album that this song comes from)...

So as a song, it is actually pretty damn good, and to listen to what in my opinion is the first truly spectacular heavy metal band in the new millennium is pretty spectacular, but in all truth I would say that this song is pretty mid level, but if you take this song by itself I am sure you will like it, but if you go through more of this album I hate to say it, but I am sure that you will end up finding other songs that are I hate to say it just barely better!
