The 1950s was an amazing decade for Science Fiction… As a matter of fact I would venture to say that it was a defining decade for the genre and that because of this milestone, Science Fiction was changed forever!

Now I know that, that sounds kind of high and mighty to say, but it is true! I mean in some cases (like, The Thing From Another World (1951)), some of these movies would eventually go on to have long shelf lives in the remakes that were based on these old movies!

Another thing that I think makes these old classics so amazing is that in a lot of cases these movies were the inspiration for movies that have been made with in the last 30 years or so! I know I already used this example but I thought that I would use it again (It is the best), but, The Thing From Another World stands out as the best example of this!

Why? Well simply put, this movie inspired John Carpenter to do a remake of the movie, which in turn spawned its own prequel!

Another thing that is great about these classic Science Fiction movies is (although this is not literally true, it is not far from it…) But these old classic in some ways can be said to be the ancestor of the modern Science Fiction B Movie gem! What with their outrageous acting, bad special effects, and amazingly campy story lines…

And all of this I believe is what makes Phantom From Space (1953) a good movie…

Written by: William Raynor (Killer’s From Space), Myles Wilder (Seven Guns To Mesa), & Directed by: W. Lee Wilder (The Snow Creature). Starring: Ted Cooper (The Thing From Another World), Jim Bannon (The Missing Juror), Rudolph Anders (She Demons), James Seay (Kiss Me Deadly), Noreen Nash (Giant) and Dick Sands (The Band Wagon).

This movie tells the story of an Alien who crash lands on Earth and finds getting around to be something of a problem… As do the people around him as well… You see at first this Alien just disrupts radio and TV signals, and crews from the FCC comes out to investigate what went on out there…
Now as time goes on though, this Alien ends up being scared by some people and ends up killing a few people (thus drawing in the local Police Department)…

Now a group comprising a member of the FCC, the Police, a military officer, a Scientist (and his assistant) will have to do whatever it takes to stop this Alien before the Alien can do more damage… But not just that, they also need to save the Alien before he suffocates (he doesn’t breath oxygen.)

In the end this movie is an interesting one, it was good but not great, definitely worth a watch at least once if you are a fan of these types of classic Science Fiction!
